We've been married since 2001. - BO, Arizona
...just right for each other... - CM, Texas
We continue to marvel how either one of us would have ever found each other if it hadn't been for Concerned Singles. - KB & MG, New York
...another happy result... - MC, South Carolina
Without Concerned Singles there is virtually no chance... - SW, Wisconsin
Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone; it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new.
- Ursula K. LeGuin
It's Saturday noon and you're standing on top of a hill in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
Rolling lawns and meadows stretch in all directions to meet the surrounding woodlands, already beginning to turn color. A spring-fed pond sparkles in the mild mid-September sunshine. An organic garden shows off its colorful harvest bounty. Seven proud llamas stride forward to investigate as you linger at the edge of their paddock.
In the foreground, a white tent is thronged with partygoers, most of them strangers to one another, but already engaged in animated conversation. Why? Because they share a common interest: they are here to celebrate the twenty-fifth birthday of Concerned Singles. The mostly single crowd is leavened with a number of the couples who have met over the years through CS. Many of the guests live relatively nearby, but quite a few have traveled some distance: from central and eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Metro New York, Upstate New York and points west, New Jersey, northern Vermont, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina!
As they chat, the guests nibble on assorted snacks, and peruse the illustrated stories of more of the couples who met through CS. I offer a warm welcome to my guests, offer a very brief history of Concerned Singles, and introduce the Concerned Couples, each of whom I present with a long-stemmed white rose and a white carnation boutonniere. A little while later, one of the guests asks the rest of us to introduce ourselves briefly, and initiates a discussion on subjects related to the search for love.
The talented singer/songwriter JoAnne Spies delights us with a selection of her captivating songs, including the Concerned Singles Song (see hompage sidebar), which she wrote specifically for the occasion.
Now everybody's ready for the international buffet featuring Indian, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican specialties from local restaurants. Martha's special carrot wiggle cake (you have to see it to believe it) is a great hit at the dessert buffet,
As the day fades, guests are exchanging contact information and bidding goodbye. It was a perfect occasion, and one that lingers in the memory.
I wish you could all have been at Hawkmeadow Farm with us to celebrate.
We may have to do it again next year. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a
Second Annual Concerned SinglesTwenty-Fifth Birthday Party!
